When he reported aboard Halibut and Galantin found out he had been on S-39 when she was lost and left S-28 two weeks before she went down he told him, "Gugliotta, your a Jonah, You don't leave Halibut before I do." Gugliotta relieved Galantin and brought Halibut back to New London. According to Gugliotta, S-28 went down with all hands off Pearl Harbor two weeks after he left her, he was on leave at the time.
Halibut also was too badly damaged to repair and ended up as pier-side trainer in New London. Gugliotta told me that one of the depth charges detonated on top of the 4" deck gun and they could tell by the scorch marks on the gun, breech was split, trunnions sprung, sights destroyed, and heaviest hull deformation was directly under the gun foundation. He then went to Halibut as XO under Galantin and made her last patrol where she was badly depth charged. Anyway, after the S-39 was lost on Rossel Reef near Australia, Gugliotta wound up on S-28 and had his first command tour on her.
